* Had a nice card from John Richardson and a donation towards Tony's bench, I'll bring the card on Wednesday. * Had a thank you card from the Horse Show, featuring us among others. Will bring that too. * At the Auction of Promises for Church and Guide Dog for the Blind charities four people paid to come and work with us Stephanie from The Bury, Fiona from the Old Vicarage, Ted Frith and Fiona's husband. That was £40, and we raised £95 to do some work at the Pool Club next spring and also £50 to spray Vivienne's patio to stop it being slippery. Progress last Wednesday Adequately reported by I/C 365, good list of jobs done. Well done all. Further Out I was told that Coffee mornings at the Dacre Rooms are now on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Fridays. Some variation near Bank Holidays. Not sure about this now - maybe the 2nd Friday is not actually organised yet. September 27th
We finished the painting of Church House, good job done. We PAT tested the new coffee machine in Church House. We finished the painting of the Coopers Hill bench and painted the bollards there white. We put the lining up and took some art show screens to the Dacre Rooms for the art weekend. September 20th On Wednesday we had a bonfire, but still more to burn! We also painted the bench at Coopers Hill, removed the broken branch there, and painted the bollards on the pavement. We zoomed to Parkfield Rec and replaced two fence posts and some rails, and added some more rails. Also went to the Northern boundary and moved the rail back up to horizontal. We also (actually Christine working alone!) tided up the front of the Memorial Hall and the northern side of the entrance to the car park. We put the lining up on Friday and took it down on Monday September 13th We removed the contents of the football container, repaired the floor, took loads of stuff to the bonfire, David arranged for a scrap man to collect the metal, and Neil took some to the dump. The required stuff was put back inside neatly and there is now room for much more. For example May Festival and Folk Weekend tables and chairs etc. We also put the roof lining up, and took it down again. September 6th Last Wednesday we had a another bonfire, replaced some rails in the Parkfield Rec car park, removed the Autumn Show banners from the High Street and stored them away for next year, and mended the football club container roof - strong smell of resin and some happy people at the end. On Friday Jon M and Gordon did some overtime and replaced a ring on the cooker in the Dacre Rooms. Progress Wed 16th Aug

We fitted the corner protectors in the Green Room corridor, cut both the Eastern and Western hedges and removed the arisings, we cleared much of the perimeter and paths of sidings, and varnished the flower stands in the church, PAT tested the equipment in Church House (except that Jon had already done it but had forgotten - they did find an appliance that had not been done though - so not all lost). Later I went and secured the Peters Green toilet door so it could not be used (rotten floor). During the last week Jon and David fixed the broken Dacre Rooms clock. An amazing amount done despite the weather forecast.

Future We have been asked to do games (primarily for the children) in the garden on the afternoon of the Autumn Show. Saturday 2nd September. Volunteers? We will also be putting out the tables on the previous Friday evening, and putting them away on the Saturday after the show. I expect they want us to put out the signs for the show - I will leave that with I/C2. Progress Last Week
* We fitted the new Neighbourhood Watch signs around the village * We repaired rails and installed new posts on Parkfield Rec car park fence * We top coated most of the top windows at Church House * We cleared the area around the NW and SW churchyard gates * We cleared yet more ivy from graves * We fitted new cigarette bins at the Memorial Hall Thursday Last Thursday we set out tables for the County WI tea and put them away too. Last Wednesday 12th and Saturday 15th and Sunday 9th
Last Wednesday we did some jobs at the Memorial hall - stopping light flickering in archive room, cleared the gutters, freed the door scraping, (the one into the hall from the lobby), cleared out the cigarette boxes and decided to buy new ones, confirmed that there is no insulation over the lounge. We also washed and sanded the upper windows at Church House and applied primer/undercoat to the bare wood. THEN we cut the hedge on the Eastern boundary of the Churchyard and took all four (or was it five?) 1 ton bags of clippings to the bonfire site. Andy wielding his hedge trimmer - do we owe you something for petrol Andy? On Sunday 9th we erected and took down two marquees for the Great Kimpton Bake-Off, we also judged the boat competition. On Saturday 15th we judged the sheds at the Kimpton Allotment competition. Progress Last Wednesday
We filled the skip with rubbish from the allotments, we cleared the perimeter of the Memorial Hall car park, but might need another tidy, due to weather. We looked at the damage to the Green Room corridor walls , caused by the chair trolleys, and thought of a possible solution. A job for the future. We helped erect the signs for the Folk Festival, this took much longer than anticipated, perhaps discuss with Gordon on Wednesday a different plan for next time. We fetched a load of dumped domestic garden rubbish from Parkfield Rec car park and took to the bonfire. Carina - what can we do to stop this dumping? i/c 3 Calling for the last time
Progress Wed 14th June In the blistering sun the serfs slaved on: Dacre Rooms Picnic Tables adapted for new sun shades Staining of Church House cladding completed Section of fascia board & cover strip replaced above kitchen ext. door Undercoat/primer complete on fascia board & new soffit boards Lock-up shed stained Football nets on Rec fixed Outstanding on Church House Gloss to rear half of fascia board and all the soffits All top windows need to be washed, rubbed down, & painted. Hitchin Police Station have run out of Neighbourhood Watch signs, Alan Smith will be in touch again when they are available. Yesterday a somewhat depleted BWP group met at the Dacre Rooms. Nevertheless, some useful work was done:
The fence between the Dacre Rooms and the docs was repaired. A replacement arris rail was fitted and a number of palings replaced (see the photo on the BWP webpage. Supplies for the repair were obtained at no cost (I like it) from an abandoned fence panel found after zooming to Parkfield car park where it had been dumped. The side alley was weeded, the farmers market signs ,for Friday, were erected. The new cupboard upstairs, created by Les a month or so ago, was found to have some damp, so the intended shelving was not installed. Instead the contents of the cupboard were re-located and the cupboard allowed to ventilate. The source of the water ingress was sought and some external work will need to be done at a later date. The unwanted pallets were removed from behind the Rooms. In addition the correct way to vote at the general election was not established at coffee time. Thanks to John M, Les, Pete, David P, David S, Bob M for the work and Geoff, Paul and Ray for the company at coffee, and to Sue and Neil for the loan of the ladder. i/c 3 Calling
Progress Wed 31st May More of Church House cladding & barge board painted Les & JohnM working on soffits Church gutters & gullies cleared of vegetation, ready for architects 5 year inspection. Next Wed 7th June i/c 3 is also having a WER, living with the Druids in the stone circle at Avebury for a week! Jon Marsh will find jobs at the Dacre Rooms at 9.30 am for any poor serfs who haven’t got a WER to go to. i/c3 Calling May 24th Under a blistering sun Les & JohnM replaced the exit handrail to Church House, and the post to the play area fence. Both have very smart metal shoes now. The rest of us kept in the shade as much as possible, continuing with the washing down & staining of the cladding, clean down and prime/undercoat the barge boards and soffits. Still a lot of work to be done up there – the high level wooden windows will be very fiddly! Paul joined us for coffee, his leg is still mending. May 7th Lots done around the May Festival. Particularly the art Show screens up and down. Last Wednesday we carried on with the soffit repair, glossed the barge boards and continued with staining the cladding. it looks much, much better. Still more to do. We zoomed to Peters Green hall to weed kill in the car park and removed some fallen branches. Progress April 28th Monday we erected the art show screens, well done and thank you to everyone who turned up, particularly John P who did preparatory work and supervised on the day. Despite me panicking that we would have too many people it was just right. Big job. Next year we will be doing it on the Sunday afternoon so more younger people can (hopefully) be there. On Wednesday at Church House we replaced some of the soffits, and repaired a barge board. We sanded and primed/undercoated the South and East barge boards as well as the side door, and stained the East elevation cladding and some of the South. Keith and his team did more benches ready for the May Festival. Some members were hijacked to do things at the Dacre Rooms. |
