i/c 3 Calling
Progress Wed 31st May More of Church House cladding & barge board painted Les & JohnM working on soffits Church gutters & gullies cleared of vegetation, ready for architects 5 year inspection. Next Wed 7th June i/c 3 is also having a WER, living with the Druids in the stone circle at Avebury for a week! Jon Marsh will find jobs at the Dacre Rooms at 9.30 am for any poor serfs who haven’t got a WER to go to. i/c3 Calling May 24th Under a blistering sun Les & JohnM replaced the exit handrail to Church House, and the post to the play area fence. Both have very smart metal shoes now. The rest of us kept in the shade as much as possible, continuing with the washing down & staining of the cladding, clean down and prime/undercoat the barge boards and soffits. Still a lot of work to be done up there – the high level wooden windows will be very fiddly! Paul joined us for coffee, his leg is still mending. May 7th Lots done around the May Festival. Particularly the art Show screens up and down. Last Wednesday we carried on with the soffit repair, glossed the barge boards and continued with staining the cladding. it looks much, much better. Still more to do. We zoomed to Peters Green hall to weed kill in the car park and removed some fallen branches. Progress April 28th Monday we erected the art show screens, well done and thank you to everyone who turned up, particularly John P who did preparatory work and supervised on the day. Despite me panicking that we would have too many people it was just right. Big job. Next year we will be doing it on the Sunday afternoon so more younger people can (hopefully) be there. On Wednesday at Church House we replaced some of the soffits, and repaired a barge board. We sanded and primed/undercoated the South and East barge boards as well as the side door, and stained the East elevation cladding and some of the South. Keith and his team did more benches ready for the May Festival. Some members were hijacked to do things at the Dacre Rooms.

Good mornings work by all the serfs, thanks also to Dan & Tom (visiting serfs from Devon), the boss man should be very pleased when he returns on Sunday
Progress Pete had a small bonfire by his standards. Benches in churchyard, RBL on rec, by tennis courts cleaned & painted. David, all by himself, sanded & coated the surround & posts of the FP Map (reported top rail shows signs of rot at ends) Ridge of BWP shed re-felted FP post at top of rec fixed & post-creted Paul, Dan, Tom & BobM purchased MOT1 at Wyvale & applied to steps of FP61 Florescent tube to exterior of main hall exit on S side of Memorial Hall replaced (not sure if it works, not sure what circumstances make it automatically come on? I will try & test it when dark) Plungers in Green Room toilet basin wastes removed. (Les thinks he can free them, apply waterproof grease, and replace – leave you to decide with Barbara, whether you want Les to proceed with this or just leave the wastes without any plugs?) Geoff joined us for the usual arguments over coffee, Rectors being one of the subjects discussed!! i/c3 Progress Last Wednesday March 15th
We had a big bonfire, which was apparently very hot. We erected 10 mph signs at both ends of the roadway between Hitch Lane and the Parkfield Rec car park. We fixed a no ball games against the hut sign on the back of the cricket pavilion. We fetched broken fence panels from behind Parkfield and took them to behind Church House. Jon and DavidP did some Dacre Rooms jobs. In overtime, Jon M turned the allotment water on after winter shut down and discovered leaks in the system, which he mended. Lengthy catch up blog as webmaster has been busy with new grandchild!
News * How about a fun bowls evening at the Rec one summer evening? With partners or without. It doesn't matter if you don't think you can play - you will be surprised how good you are. Let me know if you are interetsed in principle and I will get some dates from Dud and Marion Ginn. * Small world. Last week we unearthed the Beech Thomas grave, today on the radio they were talking about the WW1 trenches satirical paper and they mentioned that it took the mickey out of Beech Thomas, who was an official WW1 war correspondent, and allegedly completely useless. There is a book out and a play opens this week. '('Wipers Weekly''?). Might be worth getting hold of a copy. * I received the £200 donation from the Boot last week. Progress Wednesday 8th March We raised up four grave surrounds. Excellent work. Date awaited 22nd February ic/1567th Today, we had nine BWP members at the school (although one went home early). I don't know if there were other teams working elsewhere. We had a huge number of kids to deal with - all incredibly enthusiastic - so many thanks to the BWP members and the teachers. We did many jobs; - painting tyres to make potato planters - digging over the four raised beds - digging out the good compost for the above beds and filling another compost bin - constructing five bean wigwams - adding to the willow fence with some fresh wands - laying two trailer-fulls of bark chippings ( there is a patch of path that has not been done as there is too much grass on it, so I will weedkill that part prior to laying more chippings). - staining the four planting boxes beside a classroom. - clearing some stones from around the mound of soil. The school was very appreciative and I have received a thank-you text from Jenny. Coffee was taken in the staffroom with refreshments supplied by the staff, to whom many thanks. Progress Wednesday 8th February We set out the tables for the WI do, we put a second coat of paint on the church flower stands, we had a BIG bonfire, we removed and took to the bonfire two trailer loads of ivy and hedge cuttings from the Parkfield Rec car park area. At the Memorial Hall we fixed the sound loop mike to the ceiling in the Lounge, made the Green Room-entrance-outside-light only work at night, mended the ladies loo lock (but it might need another grub screw to fix it properly). We removed a bulb in the Green Room that was flickering. Jon M has since bought a replacement. Les had done some overtime work in the Dacre Rooms in the week before, making cupboards upstairs. Pete D has been busy during overtime taking ivy off trees in the roadway leading up to Parkfield Rec.On Thursday morning we put the WI tables away again. Progress Last Wed 25th January Weather against us but............ We replaced Bonnie's old landline number on the Church notice board with her mobile number. We replaced the wheel on the play equipment in the Rec, we fitted the hooks to hang the blackout curtains in the Dacre Rooms and made the main door not scratch on the floor, helped Kate with some marking out of table tops, did some de-graffit-ing, We tried to have a bonfire at the top of the Rec, but no go. We had a pleasantly warm coffee in the D Rooms - thank John and David, it was very comfortable We presented Simon with his richly deserved trophy, and hope he takes good care of it. Last Wednesday 18th Jan I/C 3 Report ''Salt in bins topped up. Lamp at entrance to Green Room replaced and PIR reset. There was 1 spare in the Boiler Room. (I have the packet with lamp details, suggest we get the equivalent LED as a spare) Les & David looked at the Church Notice Board As far as I know, everyone else worked hard in the sunshine up at the Rec to keep warm'' Progress Wednesday 9th January We removed the curtains from the Church House windows to clear the way for the replacements, we cleared the Rec boot brush of mud, again. We had a new tool made for the Rec play equipment wheel, and John M took it off but needed a washer to make it work properly, we cleared more wood from the East hedge and had a monster bonfire - here Andy is mentioned in dispatches because he stayed with the bonfire through our coffee and bread pudding break and managed to get it all cleared. We made the football dugout bench less wobbly by putting a beam under it (quite a big job). We tightened up the Rec gates bolts again. We took the Xmas lights down at the school. A pleasant apre (French but can't do the accents)) Christmas BWP session was held in the Dacre Rooms today. As well as the usual entertaining banter, we did a few useful jobs.
The missing panel in the utility room ceiling was fitted by Les and John M. The hole in the office wall was filled by John P and Helmar and the door stop was fettled to stop future wall damage caused by the handle. The hole in the ceiling outside the office was examined and a solution has been agreed, the work is yet to be done, but it will involve covering the whole area with either plasterboard or ply. I will need to buy this, A route for the final 13A soket requested by Kate in the main room downstairs has been established. This will be done at a later date, I have all the needed bits. David S managed to figure out the cooker eventually, so we had warm mince pies made by Val P. The outside work involving the painting of the flashing with bitumin paint was not done as it was too cold. John P did the washing up. News
* The Memorial Hall Committee gave us a donation of £250, and the Parish Council voted a donation of £400 at their last meeting. Thank you both. * I emailed the White Horse Committee to say we would in principle help with any refurbishment if the project takes off. I did say our skills are many but not for commercial quality restaurant decor. (Hope that's OK). I have had a reply and am meeting Neil in the New Year to hear what they want to do in Phase 1, and tell them which bits we could help with. * Andy and I met with the family who are funding a new bench to go in the churchyard, down near the bins, and am progressing that. Probably will be a month or too before everything is agreed with the authorities. Last Tuesday 13th December We had a superb Christmas lunch. Can't wait for next year. Last Wednesday 14th December We did jobs in the Dacre Rooms - Christmas lights installed over the porch, fresh guttering installed, lamp timer reset, furniture moved about. We removed loads of dead wood and ivy from the East hedge of the Rec and burned it on a bonfire. We zoomed to the Memorial Hall and removed a lock on the front of stage doors, subsequently I replaced it and gave the MONKEYS lady a new key. That will hopefully do until Roger gets the new front of stage in place. Progress Achieved Wednesday 23rd November
My goodness we shifted an enormous amount of branches and ivy from behind Church House and from the John Lewis tree branch. Well done everybody, particularly Simon who did the sawing up. The bonfire is ENORMOUS. Behind Church House does look better, but I would like to improve it yet more. We also had a look at the leaking Dacre Rooms roof. Progress Last Week
We cut back the growth on the Church Lane bank of the churchyard, we finished cutting around the boles of the Lime trees, we cut trees from graves, and removed ivy from graves. We tried to find out where the Church House roof is leaking, spraying some seams with gunge, and cleared leaves from the roof and mud from the drains. We raised up the Rainback memorial stones at the East of the church and took photos of the cast iron bollards ready for Ebay. We cut down branches from the trees behind Church House, those overhanging Anna Bossatta's garden, and took much of it to the bonfire. As the forecast was wet, the planned Church Lane work was abandoned and we met in the Dacre Rooms to tackle some of the tasks there: The water feed to the urinal cistern was cut and capped and the cistern and urinals removed along with all the pipe-work. The drains were cut flush with the floor and plugged, they await a final filling with cement. The remains of the wood that supported the vanity wall was also removed and the holes in the room wall were filled. Upstairs the table tops had the corners rounded for safety reasons. Extra long table tops were collected from B&Q and these were also rounded. A fluorescent light fitting in the front upstairs room was replaced with an LED fitting. This involved breaking down a wall in the roof space to access the wiring. This was needed anyway so that the roof insulation can be fitted at a later date. The clock weight drop box had it’s cover re-fitted (it had been removed to fit the wiring to the outside sockets earlier). The outside clock light bulb was replaced with an LED bulb. The delivery of wood bark chips that had been left in the recreation ground access road was moved to storage behind the Dacre Rooms |
