* The four teams that entered the quiz did well, mostly. Out of 12 teams, one came 2nd, one came 4th, one came 5th and the other won the wooden spoon! The team that came second had an extra (9th) member, so was illegal really. David you owe me £9 for your guest. Please look under the floorboards and bring it on Wed. * Kate Buckenham wants to know if anyone would like to help Mark sell wine from the Dacre Rooms on the Sat and Sun of may festival, she suggests an hour or so stint. Discuss at coffee. * Discuss who is around to help Sue Foote's project - 12th June (trailer and chairs/tables moving). I am not around, is Andy? * Planning ahead, just for inf - next week we will put the new gate on the Parkfield Rec car park entrance and replace the corner post at the pedestrian entrance. Three deep holes! Also mend any broken perimeter fence rails or posts and remove any brambles from rails. The two Wednesdays after that are mainly painting benches and the swings in the Rec - Keith would like to get things ship shape before the May Festival. No doubt odd jobs will come up as well. Progress Last Week We did a superb job in trimming the southern hedge on FP34, it looks good. Well done those involved. Also managed to remove quite a few trees from Alan Smith's boundary without mishap. I think we took 5 trailer loads of stuff to the allotment! The gate team went to the Harding gate to try and steady the wobbly post, but more work needed, ground too soft to take the special tool Les bought, but he has another cunning plan. * Date fixed for BWP Cookout at 108 - Thursday June 23rd. Hope Geoff is up to doing the catering by then * The Bowls Club (actually Dud and Marion Ginn) has invited the BWP to an afternoon of playing bowls and tea and cakes one day in the summer. Date to be decided. * Kate Buckenham (and MarkB) are considering running a wine bar at the Dacre Rooms on the Sat and Sun of the May Festival. She wonders if any of the BWP would be prepared to do an hour or so stint helping Mark. She postulates it running from about 12 noon to 1600 or so each day. Anyone interested see her and/or discuss at coffee Wed? Progress last Wednesday Not a very nice day, we continued to work on the bannister at the Dacre Rooms, freed up some electrical sockets there too, filled in the hole in the internal wall where the gas heater had been, and the brave outside crew removed yet more ivy from the trees on the Southern allotment hedge. We zoomed to Ayot church to get the notice board for new lettering but after discussion with Christine (the churchwarden), left it there for a rethink on their part. Pete and I fetched more willow from Rothamstead for the school outdoor classroom Further Out Friday 18th March - Community Coffee at Dacre Rooms Friday 18th March - Scout/Guide Quiz Friday 8th April - Tennis Club coffee at Dacre Rooms Friday 22nd April - Community Coffee at Dacre Rooms Friday 13th May - Tennis Club Coffee at Dacre Rooms Friday 27th May - Community Coffee at Dacre Rooms Sunday 12th June. * Welcome to Simon T, with us during his sabbatical. * Could all those going to the Scout/guide quiz please bring the money (£9 each person) * Do not believe the stories you may hear about a load of MDF shooting off the roof of a Landrover after some sharp braking. And remember the power of Photoshop if any fabricated images appear. A life long Scouting familiarity with ropes and knots, coupled with several awards for Advanced Driving should indicate otherwise. Last Wednesday's Progress Jon, Les and I fetched supplies from Dewson's for the Dacre Rooms jobs. At the D Rooms we fitted the new bannister system (more to be done), took a door off and refitted it so it closed, refitted a door floor covering strip, filled in the hole in the outer south wall where the old gas heater ventilated, tried to ready the porch for painting but lots of plaster blown, but did get wood work (nearly) ready for undercoating. At the Rec yet more ivy killed on east hedge, at Ayot we surveyed the notice board job. At the Memorial Hall took old tea urns to metal pile on allotment - which I hope David's business partner will remove soon. * We received a donation of £10 from the WI for putting the tables out for their party * We received a donation of £150 from the Horse Show Committee. I was surprised - and said so - since I thought they had lost money last year. However Mitch said they decided to donate to us and the football club this year. * Sue Foote has asked us to help with one of her projects on June 12th, It involves taking tables and chairs to school. So will check that Andy is around and willing to use the trailer, (I will be away). * There are some more willows to be fetched from Rothamstead for the school. Anyone available to help this week or next? Progress Last Week John Pollington's report 1) 4 crocked members watched the remainder of the team off load a large trailer of art screens. Ben had brought the large tractor & trailer, and had to park with one small wheel on the Green (David nearly had kitten’s)! 2) While we were on the Green, some members helped a damsel in distress. Bronika (Bob would approve) needed to get a new chair that was too large through a door frame that was too small. Achieved without structural alterations to her cottage. 3) The Tech Team zoomed to the rec and repaired the waste bin. 4) Pete took a small team on foot to cut some of the ivy on the trees in the rec. [They completed the west hedge apparently, Bob] They worked really hard, but there is a lot of ivy on other hedges! 5) Keith did a lot of scrubbing on the benches and equipment in the rec play area, while the remaining crocks gave him encouragement and occasionally waived a drying rag around. * As you may have heard, Tony D is hors de combat. He fell down his stairs in the middle of the night and cracked his pelvis. He is walking about on crutches but, he says, it is very painful. Jon M is also not well, he has been in bed for the last couple of days, but is up today. Tony N is walking well. He made it to the coffee morning at the Dacre Rooms yesterday. BobM is back on parade, as is Keith. * We have been asked to add Bonnie to the Ayot church notice board - David's skills in demand. Also see if it needs any other attention. We can fetch it in due * Do go and look (and feel) the Harding gate now it is hung, Les has done (as we have come to expect) a superb job. We still have to strengthen the post somehow. Progress Last Wednesday we put out tables, chairs and the screens for a WI anniversary party. We had a monster bonfire at the allotment - burned everything, Pete was not concerned with wet wood, it all went. We loaded all the allotment rubbish into a skip, and from behind the Dacre Rooms the concrete support of a litter bin, and the old chair seats from the Dacre Rooms. We retrieved a dead fallen tree from Butt End Side and took it to the bonfire, we moved the new picnic tables out from behind the Dacre Rooms and took one of the old ones up to our bonfire site for us to use. Les and Jack finished off work on the Harding gate, and worked out to fix the rubbish bin on the Rec. On Thursday Pete and I went to Rothampstead to fetch eleven bundles of Willows for the school. Last Wednesday
We distributed play bark in the play area of the Rec. Big job, I expected smaller more manageable bags - it was hard work and the team did a sterling job. We stored the unused play bark behind the Dacre Rooms for future use. At the Dacre Room we removed a redundant gas heater and associated piping (which was resting outside for about 10 minutes before it was whisked away by an itinerant scrap dealer), we removed part of the wooden wall in one of the top rooms and planned a new screen for the bannister, we made the inner front door shut properly and fitted a ball catch so it would shut and started on the door into the main room.
