The Kimpton Bench Working Party
‘’Helping to make Kimpton an even better place to live’’
The Kimpton Bench Working Party began 13 years ago, when a few people got together to keep Kimpton’s public seats and benches in good order. They also acquired new benches to site around the village. Since then it has expanded to a larger group and the work it does has grown to include all sorts of jobs around the Parish. These jobs include work in the churchyard, such as repairing gravestones and cutting hedges, work for the Parish Council, involving tidying up empty allotments, cutting back overhanging tree branches on pavements, maintaining play equipment, maintaining bus shelters, installing dog mess bins, general waste bins and so on. Also, we do maintenance work at the village Memorial Hall – gutter clearing, hedge cutting, and minor repairs. At the Hall we also put up the internal ‘’marquee lining’’ which transforms it into a lovely venue for weddings and other events.
We also help out at village events – for example, we run the gate and parking at the annual Horse Show, help at the Autumn Show by running games for the children as well as setting out the tables for the display of produce etc.
We meet every Wednesday morning to tackle the village maintenance jobs, liaising with the Parish Council in our role as a volunteer working party.
The team is currently 22 people, many retired and aged from early fifties to over 80, including one female but we hope more will join us.
The above description is a bit dry and sounds like all work, but nothing could be further from the truth! Our time together always involves a coffee break, that can last anything from 30 minutes to 2 hours, including much light hearted discussion and disagreements as we try to solve all the world’s problems in one coffee session!
If you fancy getting involved in ‘’Helping make Kimpton a better place to live,’’ then do get in touch (see the ‘contact us’ link above) and come along for a Wednesday morning to see if you like it.
